About us

Built by Model Railways Enthusiasts, Precision Model Works is a 3D printing and custom model-making firm in Hyderabad, India, that specialises in making models of Indian Railways in various formats. The core of our business is our passion for BOTH Indian Railways and Model Railways, bridging a long-unfilled gap in the hobby market where one of the world's most significant railways has been left underrepresented.

Our Vision

Develop and build a thriving community of Model Train and Indian Railway enthusiasts who represent the rich history and tell untold stories of India and her Railways to the world through Model Railways and model making.

Our Mission

Build top-tier model-building capabilities in India using creative design techniques, modern technologies, robust processes and a stringent quality attitude that can take our capabilities to the global stage.

Kaustav Chatterjee (of the Trains and Dioramas YouTube channel), his wife, Mouli Chatterjee, and Jeremiah Bunyan (now departed) co-founded PMW in May 2022. Model Railroading or Model Railway, often considered the ‘best hobby in the world,’ has very limited presence and exposure in the Indian subcontinent, and PMW aims to fill that gap by introducing accurate scale models of the Indian Railways in various formats.

Kaustav is a lifelong model maker with a strong passion towards model railways. He has taught and influenced many model makers around the globe through his YouTube channel and social media, and constantly promotes excellence in model making. He has spent 15+ years learning about various techniques, technology and the artistic elements of creating hyper-realistic displays with Model Trains. At PMW, Kaustav leads the full gamut of the business, starting from product conceptualisation to delivery and everything in between.

Mouli is a multi-media artist with a vast knowledge of various artistic methods and brings an 'outsider's view' in the artistic processes at PMW. Along with that, she also manages certain production activities and administration.

How we work

The primary technology used to create these models is 3D printing, often known as 'additive manufacturing', specifically Resin/LCD 3D printing. However, 3D printing is just one part of the equation, and even though important, once set, it is the 'easy part.' We take pride in our beautiful paintwork, artwork, carefully assembled fine detail parts and leave no stone unturned to mimic the real world in miniature as closely as possible, so the bulk of the effort and time goes into accurate painting and detailing of these items, the majority of which is done purely by hand by trained and highly talented professionals.

While we fabricate and make our models from scratch, we also source quality components like motors, couplers, specialised PCBs, decoders and other essential components from various suppliers around the globe, often very renowned names in the world of Model Trains. Our designs use the specifications of these OEMs as well as global model railway standards (currently, we follow NMRA standards), hence maintaining great adaptability of our products to any model railway enthusiast around the globe.

So far, we have one central facility in Gachhibowli, Hyderabad, from where we operate.

Our Business Model

We are primarily a 'made-to-order' setup, carrying little running inventory. We have two processes:

  1. Small batch production: This is project-based work and is typically done for new releases and motorised models to optimise the supply chain and gauge market interest. Many items required in these projects are sourced from different parts of the world as well as complex to build; hence, we use pre-order data to forecast potential sales and create batch sizes that are optimised for interest vs. investment.
  2. Made-to-Order: For more established, non-motorised products, we take a 'made-to-order ' approach. Once the customer places the order, it gets into the production pipeline - we source raw materials (if needed), schedule prints, and once printed, they get to the production workflow of post-processing, painting, artwork and assembly. This is a running process where we work on orders of multiple customers simultaneously in different workflows set up for different types of products. For fully decorated models, we typically make and ship these items within 60-75 days of receiving the order, whereas for DIY kits, we ship within 14 working days. We do provide some customisation options as well, depending on our bandwidth, like realistic weathering and installing additional features for an additional fee.
